Gather the Tools Before You Start
Keep the setup small enough that you will actually use it. A practical IPM kit can include a hand lens, phone camera, garden gloves, small pruning shears, a notebook or digital log, sticky cards when appropriate, sealable bags for samples, and plant labels. Step 5: Choose Controls From Lower Impact to Higher Impact
When a threshold is crossed, begin with controls that fit the identified pest and minimize disruption. Depending on the problem, that can mean hand-picking, pruning affected parts, barriers, row covers, traps, water sprays, cultivation, mulch, or an irrigation adjustment.
Biological control also depends on timing, habitat, climate, and the target pest; protecting naturally occurring predators can be more practical than buying beneficial insects.
